ROK The Rockies Race Series Round #2 took place on May 19th, 2019 at SBR Motorsports Park. The day started off cold and windy however the drivers were happy to take to the track beginning at 8am with Master ROK. The track was slick due to the temperatures and we saw a few spins during morning practice. The lap times for all classes were a bit off from Race #1 in April due to the low temperatures. Qualifying and the Heat Races went incident free throughout the morning.

The progressive Heat Races brought us to the Finals, after the lunch break of complimentary Dominos Pizza sponsored by Bridgestone, and the weather started to break up with sunlight cutting through the clouds overhead. The most exciting pass of the weekend was made in the first Final of the afternoon with Master ROK drivers Brooks Myers and Kyle Williams battling for 2nd place over the course of the opening laps. Kyle Williams was holding off Brooks Myers until Myers had a good run coming out of turn 7 and heading towards the full-throttle sweeper turn 8. Myers got inside of Williams through this fast sweeper and pulled off a spectacular high speed pass that had the folks on the fence line cheering and applauding! Unfortunately for Myers, less than a lap later the chain broke and threw from Myers’ kart. Myers would have to watch the remainder of the Final from the sidelines.

The Senior ROK Final had a bit of action on the opening laps with a few position changes, then quickly became a single file train of karts up until the checkered flag where Filip Niemkiewicz came out victorious. The 100cc ROK class was dominated all day by Brody Shucard, however Leo Kosman who competes in 100cc Master ROK was giving his best to keep up and actually crossed the line in 2nd place overall (1st in 100cc Master ROK). The biggest action on track through the day was in the Mini ROK class. Drivers Zander De Priest and Alexander Gevorkyan touched wheels while side by side racing through the fastest corner on the track (turn 1) and Alexander Gevorkyan went air-born flying off the track and spinning through the grass. Gevorkyan was able to continue, however Zander De Priest retired from the race after the incident. Fortunately after being checked out by the medical staff, Zander De Priest was ok and actually full of smiles by the time the podium ceremony took place.

Congratulations to all of the drivers, and a big thanks to the sponsors Premier RV & Napa Auto Parts that helped make it a great day of racing at SBR Motorsports Park. we look forward to seeing everyone back for the ROK The Rockies Race Series Round #3 on June 16th, 2019!
